Tar Heels Fall to No. 8 Georgia in Carmichael Arena

Chapel Hill, N.C. – On Saturday, North Carolina hosted a Pink Meet in support of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. In the Tar Heels' second straight home competition, No. 8 Georgia defeated North Carolina 196.200-195.200 on Saturday afternoon. The Tar Heels exhibited an impressive performance against a top team, tying Georgia on beam and outscoring the Bulldogs on floor.
“This was a very exciting meet for our team,” said head coach Derek Galvin. “We were very pleased to have the University of Georgia, one of the top teams in the country, here in Chapel Hill.”
For the second straight week, Morgan Lane won the all-around competition with a score of 39.175. Haley Watts and Kaitlynn Hedelund both scored a 39.075, tying for second place. Hedelund's score represents a season-best. In addition, Lexi Cappalli notched a 38.350, placing fourth. Georgia did not have any gymnasts competing in the all-around competition.
“We're at the midpoint of the season and I like the direction we're going,” said Galvin.
Carolina began this afternoon's competition on vault, notching a 48.600. UNC placed two gymnasts in the top six. Sarah Peterson scored a 9.800, tying for fourth place, and Hedelund notched a 9.775, tying for sixth place. In addition, Watts added a 9.725 and Lane had a 9.675.
The Tar Heels next competed on the uneven bars, tallying a score of 48.825. Four Tar Heel gymnasts placed in the top seven. Lane scored a season-high of 9.825, tying for fourth place. Hedelund took sixth place with a score of 9.775. Peterson and Watts both notched a 9.750, tying for seventh place. Peterson's score represents a season-high. In addition, Acacia Cosentino added a 9.725.
On the balance beam, UNC finished with a score of 48.625. Four UNC gymnasts finished in the top seven. Lane tied for third place with a score of 9.800. Hedelund and Watts both received scores of 9.750, tying for fourth. Cappalli scored a season-high 9.675, placing eighth.
Carolina finished up the competition on the floor exercise, which proved to be its best apparatus of the afternoon. The Tar Heels tallied a season-high score of 49.150. All five recorded scores represented season bests for Tar Heel gymnasts. Cappalli notched a career-high score of 9.925, the highest among all competitors. Lane scored a 9.875, tying for second place. Watts had a 9.850, tying for fourth, Hedelund notched a 9.775, finishing eighth, and Lauren Weisel scored a 9.725, taking ninth place.
“To be able to stay with [Georgia] on one event and actually outscore them on another is something I want the team to draw strength from,” said Galvin.
Galvin said, “the focus this past week has been competing up to the level of training. Training has been going well and this afternoon they competed more like they do in training.”
The Tar Heels will be back in action on Fri, Feb. 20 in Raleigh, N.C. UNC will take on NC State, Kent State and Rutgers in Reynolds Coliseum at 7 p.m.
