UNC To Host ACC Fencing Championship Saturday and Sunday
February 20, 2015 | Fencing
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC will host the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Fencing Championships this weekend, with action taking place at Carmichael Arena throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday.
Fencing starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday for the men and at 7 a.m. on Sunday for the women. On each day, the team competition will take approximately the first three hours of the day with the individual competition following and lasting until late afternoon.
There is no charge for admission to the event.
ACC schools that sponsor fencing as a varsity sport are Boston College, Duke, Notre Dame and UNC. Four conference teams are required in order for the ACC to sponsor a championship in that sport, and fencing reached that threshold with the addition of Notre Dame this season.
The conference last sponsored a fencing championship from 1971-80, when men's fencing was a league sport. Carolina won eight of those titles with the other two claimed by Clemson and Maryland, neither of which still fields a varsity program. UNC head coach Ron Miller was at this program's helm for those titles and will witness the return of ACC men's fencing on Saturday. Sunday's event will be the first-ever ACC women's fencing championship.
The fourth-ranked Notre Dame and ninth-ranked Duke men's squads are among the top 10 in the CollegeFencing360 Coaches Poll, while North Carolina is receiving votes. On the women's side, Notre Dame is ranked No. 2 in the country with Duke, North Carolina, and Boston College all receiving votes.
Parking for fans will be available at the Bell Tower Deck, the Cobb Deck and the Raleigh Road Visitors Lot. For more information on campus parking, click here:
