March 1, 2015 | Women's Basketball
Carolina enters the ACC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and faces either 11-seed Georgia Tech or 14-seed Clemson on Thursday at 8 p.m. inside Greensboro Coliseum.
Allisha Gray led North Carolina (23-7, 10-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) with 20 points on 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc, while Jessica Washington made an equal number of three-pointers to finish with 19 points off the bench.
Latifah Coleman contributed 14 points and five assists, while Stephanie Mavunga had 11 points and nine rebounds and Brittany Rountree had 10.
Carolina was 14-of-26 from distance, tying the program record that was established on three previous occasions, most recently on Dec. 16, 2013 against New Orleans in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. That evening, UNC scored a record 124 points against the Privateers.
Down two in the closing seconds, Gray had a driving layup roll off the lane with about 5 seconds to go.
Azura Stevens put Duke up 81-77 with two free throws with 2 seconds left before Gray hit an inconsequential 30-footer at the buzzer. Stevens had 21 points and 12 rebounds. Elizabeth Williams added 18 points in her final scheduled game at Cameron Indoor Stadium for the Blue Devils (20-9, 11-5 ACC), who earned the No. 4 seed for next week's ACC Tournament.
Carolina played an exquisite first half, and led 40-29 at intermission. The game was tied 19-19, before the Tar Heels closed the half on a 21-10 run over the final nine minutes, 32 seconds. Gray had 11 in the opening stanza, followed by nine from Coleman.
The lead expanded to 43-31 on a three-pointer from Gray, but that was the only field goal Carolina scored in the first 8+ minutes of the second half. That allowed Duke to put together a 37-11 run to lead by 15, 66-51, with 8:59 remaining.
Carolina got within 78-77 on a second-chance bucket from Mavunga with 34 seconds left.
