UNC Falls to No. 7 Auburn in Final Regular Season Meet

AUBURN, Ala. – In the Tar Heels' final regular season meet of the season, No. 7 Auburn defeated North Carolina 197.100-194.025 on Friday night. UNC gymnasts dominated the all-around competition, claiming the top two spots.
In the all-around competition, Morgan Lane took first place with a score of 39.075. Lexi Cappalli finished in second place, notching a score of 38.750. Auburn did not have any gymnasts competing in the all-around competition.
Kaitlynn Hedelund, a regular performer in the all-around, only competed on bars and beam due to a stress fracture in her foot.
The Tar Heels' began tonight's competition on the uneven bars, scoring a 48.225. UNC placed four gymnasts in the top nine of competition. Lane and Lindsey Lemke notched scores of 9.800, tying for fourth place. Hedelund had a 9.750, tying for seventh place with Auburn's Bri Guy. Cappalli scored a 9.725, tying for ninth place.
“We started on bars and we had four good routines, but unfortunately we had to count a fall. Morgan [Lane] and Lindsey [Lemke] had good routines,” said head coach Derek Galvin.
Carolina next competed on vault, notching a score of 48.650. Four Tar Heel gymnasts finished in the top ten. Josselyn Mackey and Lane both had scores of 9.800, tying for sixth place with Auburn's Brittany Webster. Mackey's score represents her season-best. Lane notched a 9.750, taking ninth place among all competitors. Cappalli finished in tenth place with a score of 9.725. In addition, Lauren Weisel added a 9.575 for the Tar Heels.
On the floor exercise, UNC scored a 48.325. The Tar Heels placed four gymnasts in the top nine of competition. Lane notched a 9.825, tying for fifth with Auburn's Megan Walker. Weisel and Acacia Cosentino had scores of 9.675, tying for seventh place among all competition. Cosentino's score represents a season-best. Cappalli added a 9.625 for the Tar Heels, taking ninth place.
“We had a tough time on floor. The only strong routine was Morgan Lane's. We were not up to the level of last week,” said Galvin.
The Tar Heels finished up tonight's competition on the balance beam, which proved to be UNC's strongest apparatus of the meet. Carolina notched a score of 48.825. UNC placed four gymnasts in the top eight of competition. Beam specialist Janell Sargent scored a 9.850, tying for third place. This score ties Sargent's season-best. She also notched scores of 9.850 at Towson on Sun, Jan. 25 and against Pittsburgh on Sat, March 7. Hedelund scored a 9.775, taking seventh place. Mackey and Sarah Peterson notched scores of 9.750, tying for eighth place.
“Beam was a really good event for us tonight. Janell [Sargent] did the best routine that I've seen her do this year,” said Galvin.
“We have a week to prepare for the EAGL championships,” said Galvin. “We are looking forward to competing at Towson University. We had one of our best meets of the season there earlier this year.”
UNC will next be in action on Sun, March 22 in Towson, Md. The Tar Heels will compete in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships beginning at 12 p.m. The meet will take place in the SECU Arena.
