Tar Heels Take Fifth Place in EAGL Championships in Towson

TOWSON, Md. – At the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships on Sunday, North Carolina placed fifth, defeating Pittsburgh, but falling to George Washington, New Hampshire, NC State and Towson. The Tar Heels notched a total score of 194.800. Two UNC gymnasts placed in the top 10 of the all-around competition.
“The team showed more focus than they have in previous meets,” said head coach Derek Galvin. “It was a good finish in terms of getting some things accomplished that the team had been working on, such as being more assertive and having a balanced competition.”
In the all-around competition, Morgan Lane scored a 38.775, placing eighth. Lexi Cappalli finished in tenth place with a score of 38.075.
“The freshmen – Morgan (Lane), Lauren (Weisel), Kaitlynn (Hedelund) and Lindsey (Lemke) contributed greatly to the team this year. Looking toward the future, that is going to help us be a stronger team next year,” said Galvin.
North Carolina began this afternoon's competition on the uneven bars, notching a 48.725. UNC placed four gymnasts in the top 20 of competition. Kaitlynn Hedelund scored a 9.825, tying for third place with George Washington's Cami Drouin-Allaire. Lane and Lindsey Lemke had scores of 9.750, tying for fifteenth place. Cappalli tied for twentieth place among all competitors with a score of 9.725.
The Tar Heels next competed on the balance beam, scoring a 48.775. Four Tar Heel gymnasts placed in the top 20 of competition. Sarah Peterson notched a 9.800, tying for eleventh place among all competitors. Hedelund and Janell Sargent had scores of 9.775, tying for sixteenth place. Josselyn Mackey scored a 9.750, tying for twentieth place with Lane Jarred and Chelsea Knight of NC State. In addition, Cappalli had a 9.675.
On floor, UNC scored a 48.775. North Carolina placed five gymnasts in the top 19 of competition. Lane tied for first place with a score of 9.850. Acacia Cosentino had a season-high score of 9.750, tying for fifteenth place. Hedelund, Kristin Aloi and Lauren Weisel all had scores of 9.725, tying for nineteenth place.
Carolina concluded tonight's competition on the vault where the team scored a 48.550. UNC placed five gymnasts in the top 29. Lane scored a 9.775, tying for fourteenth place. Peterson tied for sixteenth place, notching a score of 9.750. Aloi had a 9.725, tying for twenty-first place. This was Aloi's first time competing on vault this season. Weisel and Cappalli notched scores of 9.650, tying for twenty-ninth place. Weisel's score represents her season-best.
“In terms of team competition, we are looking to build towards next year,” said Galvin.
Following the conclusion of the competition, the EAGL annual awards were announced. Haley Watts, who was unable to compete due to a season-ending knee injury, was named the EAGL Senior of the Year. Watts was also named the most valuable player for the Tar Heels this season.
“We will find out tomorrow who qualifies for the NCAAs,” said Galvin. “We know Morgan (Lane) will qualify and we are waiting to hear about Lexi (Cappalli) in the all-around and Kaitlynn (Hedelund) on bars.”
