May 6, 2015 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL --- Benton Moss improved to 7-0 and No. 20 North Carolina reached the 30-win mark for the 18th consecutive year with an 11-2 victory over UNC Ashevillle Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium. Korey Dunbar and Adam Pate had two hits each and Joe Dudek drove in three runs for the Tar Heels, who will host Elon Wednesday night at 6.
Tuesday's win was the 26th of Moss' career, moving the senior into a tie for eighth on the UNC all-time list with Thad Chrismon. He also struck out three to push his four-year total to 306, five shy of Patrick Johnson for third in Carolina history.
Carolina jumped on Asheville starter Lucas Clarke (4-7) for three runs in the second and added three more in the third. Dudek and Raburn drove in runs in both innings, and Dudek's two-run single in the third was the big blow. The sophomore first baseman moved to third on an error and scored on Raburn's first-pitch RBI single to right center.
Trevor Kelley made his 100th career appearance out of the Carolina bullpen and got the last out of the eighth before Brett Daniels worked a scoreless ninth. Kelley has pitched in an NCAA-leading 33 games this season and is now one of just eight Tar Heel pitchers to reach 100 career games. A.J. Bogucki also pitched in relief of Moss and recorded a season-high five strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
UNC (30-16) added five runs in the ninth on RBIs from Elijah Sutherland, Landon Lassiter, Skye Bolt, Logan Warmoth and Pate.
Tommy Houmard had three hits to lead UNC Asheville (20-27), while Hunter Bryant added a pair of singles for the Bulldogs.
Carolina returns to action Wednesday when the Tar Heels host Elon at 6 p.m.
