Tar Heels Take Part In NCAA And ACC Leadership Meetings
July 31, 2015 | Men's Basketball, Volleyball, Student-Athlete Development
Two Tar Heel student-athletes recently participated in leadership meetings at the conference and national levels. Paige Neuenfeldt, a rising senior on the Carolina volleyball team, took part in the Atlantic Coast Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Council meeting July 10-11 in Charlotte. Joel James, a rising senior on the UNC men's basketball team, took part in the NCAA Division I SAAC Meeting July 15-17 in Indianapolis, Ind.
James is one of 14 new representatives on the NCAA body, and one of the focuses of the meeting was building a unified voice to represent DI student-athletes. Among topics discussed were time demands, financial aid and the cost of college attendance, mental health and transfer issues.
“It was eye-opening to see the behind the scenes process of how the NCAA functions,” said James, a history major from West Palm Beach, Fla. “It was fun interacting with the other student-athlete representatives during the trip.”

As part of the ACC's body, Neuenfeldt and her counterparts discussed a wide variety of school, conference and national issues. They addressed several new conference initiatives, became trained facilitators for the One Love Foundation Escalation Workshop, and participated in leadership activities at the U.S. National Whitewater Center.
“It was a pleasure representing UNC at the ACC SAAC meeting in Charlotte a couple weekends ago,” said Neuenfeldt, a business administration major from Birmingham, Mich. “We were able to share a lot about our individual schools' student-athlete experience and about ways to help each other improve. We also got to hear from some awesome speakers like Inky Johnson who encouraged us to 'empty our bucket' every day in all that we do."
