Offensive Explosion Lifts Tar Heels Past Bulldogs
August 23, 2015 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Summer Green and Annie Kingman each scored twice as the seventh-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team powered past Fresno State 7-0 Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 1,100 fans at Fetzer Field in the fourth and final game of the 2015 Carolina Nike Classic.
The seven goals were the most for the Tar Heels in a game since they defeated Middle Tennessee 7-1 on September 17, 2010 at the Duke Nike Classic in Durham, N.C.
Also adding goals Sunday were Alexa Newfield, Alex Kimball and Emily Bruder as the Tar Heels outshot the Bulldogs 27-4 in the match. Newfield also scored twice in Friday night's 3-0 win over Weber State and Kimball scored in her second straight game as well.
UNC improved to 2-0 on the season heading into a game next Friday at the University of Texas at 8 p.m. EDT, which will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network. In Sunday's first game at the Carolina Nike Classic, Duke defeated Weber State.
For the second straight match, the Tar Heels scored less than two minutes into the game as Green finished a shot from the six-yard line off an assist from the left corner off the foot of Katie Bowen. Joanna Boyles also assisted on the goal, which came at 1:24. Less than six minutes later, Green made it 2-0 when she gathered a loose ball in the midfield, turned and sent a shot from 25 yards top shelf over Fresno goalkeeper Nicole Theroux.
Carolina added to its lead in the 29th minute when Newfield scored her third goal of the season. After Joanna Boyles picked off a pass in front of the Tar Heel bench, she fed Jessie Scarpa who advanced the ball upfield and found a streaking Newfield who chipped the ball into the bottom right corner from just inside the penalty area. Carolina extended its lead less than five minutes later when Alex Kimball scored on a header off a free kick. Dorian Bailey tapped the ball to Annie Kingman who then sent it to the eight-yard line when Kimball skied for the putaway. It's the second straight game that Kimball and Kingman have combined on a goal.
In the last minute of the first half of play, Kingman scored on a penalty kick after Sarah Ashley Firstenberg was taken down in the penalty box. The Tar Heels would add two more goals in the second half. Kingman scored at 64:19 with a finish from the top of the 18-yard box. Both Illinois transfer Abby Elinsky and freshman Kate Morris assisted on the goal, earning their first points in UNC uniforms. Carolina finished off the scoring less than a minute later on a breakaway goal by Emily Bruder. Goalkeeper Lindsey Harris' kick found Kingman near midfield and the California sophomore flicked it on to a streaking Bruder who dribbled into the penalty area and around the goalkeeper to finish into an empty net.
UNC pitched its second straight shutout of the season with goalkeepers Bryane Heaberlin, Lindsey Harris and Samantha Leshnak combining on the clean sheet.
