Green & Newfield Lead Tar Heels Past UTSA

AUSTIN, TEXAS – Summer Green and Alexa Newfield each scored two goals for UNC as the Tar Heel women's soccer team defeated the UTSA Roadrunners 5-0 in the Texas Invitational Sunday morning at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Green had the opening two goals of the game and Newfield scored once in each half. Jessie Scarpa tallied her first career goal as a Tar Heel to wrap up the 5-0 win. Cameron Castleberry had a pair of assists for UNC and Darcy McFarlane had her first career assist for the Tar Heels. Scarpa also had an assist to add to her goal.
Newfield leads Carolina with five goals this season while Green has tallied four times. UNC had posted four straight clean sheets and outscored its opponents 17-0 this season.
North Carolina outshot the Roadrunners 35-3 in the match and had seven corner kicks to zero for UTSA.
North Carolina improved to 4-0 on the season while the Roadrunners are now 0-3.
The Tar Heels scored three goals in the opening 20 minutes of the match in a half in which Carolina outshot the Roadrunners 17-3.
Summer Green struck for the first goal of the game at 4:55 of the match. Darcy McFarlane, earning her first career assist, fed a ball from the midfield that Jessie Scarpa redirected to Green in stride. The senior striker from Michigan finished from 12 yards out for her third goal of the season.
Green and Alexa Newfield then scored the second and third goals of the game on great individual efforts. Green took a pass outside the right side of the box, dribbled into the penalty area and around a couple of defenders before finishing into the lower left corner at 17:57 for her fourth goal of the season.
Less than two minutes later, Alex Newfield received a ball 35 yards out on the left side, took a dribble around a defender and crushed a shot top shelf from 30 yards out that UTSA goalkeeper Katherine Tesno had no chance on. It was 3-0 Carolina after Newfield's fourth goal of the campaign.
Carolina scored twice more in the second half. Alexa Newfield got her second of the game with 33:15 left in the second half off assists by Jessie Scarpa and Cameron Castleberry. UNC then finished off the scoring with 18:18 to play. Cameron Castleberry dribbled into the right side of the penalty area and her shot bounced off the right post. The ball caromed to Jessie Scarpa at the top of the penalty area and she buried a shot from 18 yards out into the lower right corner.
North Carolina will be back in action next Friday when it begins play in the Duke Nike Classic at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. UNC will play California on Friday at 5 p.m. and then matchup with USC next Sunday at 11 a.m. Both games will be on ESPN3 and the USC-UNC game will also be broadcast on WCHL Radio.
