Wright Pushes Tar Heels Past Broncos
August 31, 2015 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL – Zach Wright's first-half goal propelled No. 5 North Carolina to a 3-0 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos Sunday night at Fetzer Field.
With five seconds remaining in the first stanza, Andy Lopez had little time to set up the sixth corner of the half, but his cross connected with Wright in the box to put the Tar Heels up 1-0. The sophomore's header marked his first goal of the season and second in his career.
For the second straight game, Raby George took a penalty kick and sent it past Bronco goalie Kendall McIntosh to double the margin at 2-0. The kick came after forward Alan Winn was dragged down in the box by the Broncos.
With 16 minutes remaining in the game, Jonathan Campbell took the ball down the left side. A sharp pass to Jordan McCrary resulted in a one touch goal from Lopez to push the Tar Heels up 3-0. The redshirt freshman fired four goals in the preseason before tonight. Both Campbell and McCrary earned credit for the assist.
While the Tar Heels controlled the pace and position for most of the game, the Broncos tallied eight shots to Carolina's 18, including a shot on goal from Satoshi Chaffin that bounced off the left bar in the 64th minute.
Carolina goalkeeper James Pyle made four saves in the effort for his second clean sheet of the weekend.
The Tar Heels will be back in action Friday night at 7 p.m. against the William & Mary Tribe at Fetzer Field.
