UNC Draws With William & Mary
September 5, 2015 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL— No. 4 North Carolina played to a 1-1 draw with the Tribe of William & Mary Friday night at Fetzer Field.
The Tribe was first to strike, as Ryder Bell found William Eskay in the box. A one-touch just before colliding with goalkeeper James Pyle produced the first goal of the game and gave Eskay his fourth goal of the season. The collision brought goalkeeper Sam Euler into the game, who recorded three saves throughout the rest of the match.
For the second consecutive game, the Tar Heels scored in the last five seconds of the first half to tie the score at 1-1. Alex Olofson delivered a cross from the right side that found the head of Tucker Hume. A rebound from goalkeeper Mac Phillips found the head of Jonathan Campbell and he deposited his shot into the back of the net. The goals came within 73 seconds of each other.
In the 61st minute, Bell had another clean look for William & Mary, but the ball ricocheted off the right crossbar to keep the score 1-1.
Raby George faced the closest free kick of the night for the Tar Heels from six yards outside the box in the 68th minute but could not add to the score, his shot cruising just over the top of the crossbar.
With two minutes remaining in the game, Hume rocketed a ball toward Phillips, who went airborne to get the save that sent the game into overtime.
In the last remaining seconds of the 110th minute, Olofson managed to get a foot on the ball, but the shot landed just wide, resulting in the first tie of the season for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels (2-0-1) will return to action Sunday at 7 pm at Fetzer Field against Tulsa.
