#3 Carolina Blanks Virginia Tech
September 12, 2015 | Men's Soccer
Two late goals in the opening half put North Carolina (4-0-1, 1-0-0 ACC) firmly in the drivers seat against the Hokies. Senior midfielder Raby George struck in the 38th minute with his team-leading third goal of 2015.
The play began with a corner kick from Omar Holness that was initially cleared by the defense, but George settled the ball and fired a bullet into the back of the net for a 1-0 Tar Heel advantage.
Not long after at the 41:00 mark of the half, junior reserve forward Tucker Hume scored his second goal in as many games. The lanky Texan intercepted a poor clearance from the Hokies and finished from the top of the 18-yard box for a 2-0 lead that held up going into intermission.
Carolina goalie James Pyle was back in the starting lineup after leaving last Friday's match against William & Mary in the 67th minute with an injury. He made three saves, including a pair of stops in the second half to preserve his third clean sheet of the season.
The Tar Heels notched six shots in each 45-minute stanza that came out to a 12-5 advantage. UNC also enjoyed 10 corner kick opportunities to only two for the home-standing Hokies, who fall to an even 2-2 on the young season.
Carolina improves to 13-2-1 all-time against Virginia Tech, and 4-1-1 in five matches played in Blacksburg. The victory is also the 699th in program history for the Tar Heels.
Next up is a home date with No. 2 Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. on ESPNU.
