Tar Heels Storm Past Fighting Irish
September 18, 2015 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL – A goal and two assists from Colton Storm pushed No. 3 North Carolina (5-0-1) past No. 2 Notre Dame (4-2-1) in a 4-2 victory at Fetzer Field Friday afternoon. This marked the 700th win in program history.
“Probably the most important thing, I really want to thank the crowd for coming out. They were awesome, I think they're really inspiring to our players. To have these people behind us, the Fever and the fans, it just pushes you on, and for me that's the biggest takeaway. I think we won a home game because we had a crowd come in and (they) just pushed us to it," said North Carolina head coach Carlos Somoano.
The Fighting Irish struck first as Jon Gallagher notched his fourth goal of the season in the 12th minute with a shot off the left side that snuck past goalie James Pyle.
In the 20th minute, David October controlled the ball on the left side where he found Storm 15 yards out of the box. The junior ripped the shot into the back of the net to even up the score at one apiece. The goal was only the second given up by the Fighting Irish this season, the first in the 1-0 loss to Xavier earlier this week.
For the third time this season, the Tar Heels scored in the last five seconds of the first half. With a quick throw-in from Storm, Tucker Hume tallied his third goal of the season to put Carolina on top 2-1.
Storm added another assist to his night, taking the ball away from an Irish defender after a miss hit from goalie Chris Hubbard. A one-touch pass from Zach Wright found the right foot of Alan Winn, whose shot deflected off Hubbard's fingertips to extend the Tar Heel lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute.
After a foul in the 62nd minute, Raby George took a quick free kick in Notre Dame territory. Wright, behind the Irish defense, found Winn in the box and gave the sophomore forward his second goal of the match and season to make the score 4-1.
Mark Gormley cut the deficit to 4-2 with a blast after a free kick on the left side in the 68th minute. Brandon Aubrey and Patrick Hodan helped in the goal.
The Tar Heels return to Fetzer Monday at 7:00 pm against the Ospreys of North Florida (2-4).
