Women Slide Back To Seventh At Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The University of North Carolina women's golf team matched their score from the first round of the Lady Paladin Invitational to finish 18-over-par after two days. The team stands in seventh heading into the final round.
"The team is on the cusp of playing some great golf," head coach Jan Mann said. "We told them how much we believed in them and the only thing holding them back is their ability to free themselves up when they are in competition. They bounced back on the back nine. We need to make sure that we start and finish strong."
Freshman Kelly Whaley led the team in scoring in the second round with 1-over-par 73. Whaley had four birdies on the day with three bogeys and a double bogey. Whaley was very good on the par-5s carding birdies on three out of four. Whaley's 6-over for the tournament and tied for 33rd. Sophomore Lexi Harkins and junior Leslie Cloots finished with a 74 on Monday, 2-over-par. Harkins had four bogeys and two birdies while Cloots had three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey. Harkins is tied for ninth at 1-over-par for the tournament while Cloots is tied for 27th at 5-over. Senior Elizabeth Mallett posted a single birdie to go with five bogeys. Her 4-over-par for the day takes her to 7-over for the tournament and tied for 40th. Sophomore Bryana Nguyen was 5-over-par today and is 9-over-par for the tournament, tied for 45th.
Rachel Jones, competing as an individual finished the round 5-over-par with five bogeys. She's 10-over-par and tied for 47th going into the final round.
Wake Forest took the lead on the second day with a total score of 4-over 580. Missouri is hot on their tail at 5-over for second place. Clemson and Furman are third and fourth at 8-over and 9-over, respectively. New Mexico follows in fifth at 12-over-par with Virginia Tech sliding into sixth at 14-over. UND is in seventh at 18-over-par 594.
Alice Hewson from Clemson remains in first in the individual competition at 4-under-par. Michelle Butler of Missouri is at 2-under-par while teammate Jess Meek, Samford's Anna Buchanan and Furman's Taylor Totland are at 1-under-par. Tied for sixth is Wake Forest's Sierra Sims and Jennifer Kupcho along with Furman's Alice Chen all at even par. Five players are tied for ninth at 1-over-par, including UNC's Harkins.
The Lady Paladin Invitational will conclude Tuesday. Live scoring is available on Birdiefire.com.
