Women Golfers Take Sixth at Lady Paladin Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Bryana Nguyen shot 1-under-par in the final round of the Lady Paladin Invitational on Tuesday to pace the University of North Carolina women's golf team to a sixth place finish at 26-over-par 890. The team may have placed sixth, but the team had the fourth-best third round score.
"Today we saw a lot more energy and determination from the team,” head coach Jan Mann said. “They bounced back when they needed to and it was evident that they weren't going to give up. We are pleased where this team is headed and looking forward to our home event in the next couple weeks. We always enjoy playing in front of Tar Heel fans."
Nguyen had her best round of the tournament on Tuesday with five birdies and four bogeys. The sophomore's 71 gave her a tournament score of 8-over 224 and she finished tied for 29th. Junior Leslie Cloots also posted her best round in the final round. Cloots had one birdie and two bogeys in the final round to finish 6-over-par for the tournament and tied for 14th. Also tied for 14th is Lexi Harkins who finished 5-over on the day. Freshman Kelly Whaley carded a birdie and four bogeys to finish 3-over-par 75 for the day. Whaley was 9-over and tied for 32nd for the tournament. Elizabeth Mallett shot 5-over on the day to end the tournament 12-over and tied for 39th.
Rachel Jones, competing as an individual, was 4-over-par on Tuesday and finished 14-over and tied for 47th.
Missouri took home the team championship at the Lady Paladin Invitational with a 7-over-par 871 performance. Coming in second was the Furman, the host team, at 15-over-par. New Mexico finished third at 19-over-par 883 while Clemson and Wake Forest tied for fourth at 21-over-par 885. UNC was sixth at 26-over-par 890.
Alice Hewson of Clemson was the individual winner at 3-under-par 213 for the tournament. Teammates at Missouri, Jess Meek and Michelle Butler, tied for second at 1-under-par. Taylor Totland of Furman finished fourth at even par. Competing as an individual, Jessica Hoang of Clemson tied with Alice Chen of Furman and Emma Allen of Missouri for fifth at 2-over-par. Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest finished eighth at 3-over and Jacquelyn Eleey of Georgetown took ninth at 4-over.
The Tar Heels' next competition is at home at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational. The team will play host to several nationally ranked teams on the prestigious Finley Golf Course.
