CHAPEL HILL—Former North Carolina basketball player Bobby Gersten (UNC '42) will host the annual University of North Carolina Walk For Health on October 10 in Chapel Hill at the Eddie Smith Field House on the Carolina campus.
Nicknamed the "great-grandaddy of UNC Athletics" as the oldest living former Tar Heel basketball player at 94 years old, Gersten will host the effort to raise awareness and encourage youth participation in recreational activities, promote a lifelong interest in physical fitness and walking.
The day will include a youth soccer game for boys and girls ages 11-15 beginning at 11 a.m. The pre-walk warmup exercises will begin at noon with music and dancing, followed by the walk at 12:30 p.m.
The walk is slated to end at 1 p.m. at the courthouse in downtown Chapel Hill on Franklin Street with the unveiling of the Peace and Justice Plaza tribute marker for former Tar Heel head coach Dean Smith and former Chapel Hill Town Council member Bill Thorpe.
