Tar Heels Compete At St. Louis NAC

Members of the UNC men's and women's fencing teams competing at the January North American Cup in St. Louis, Mo., over the weekend, with a pair of freshmen turning in the highest finishes. Eleven Tar Heels fenced in the competition, which ran from Friday to Monday.
On Friday, sophomore Samantha Galina tied for 85th and freshman Erin O'Neill was 105th in junior women's epee, which had a field of 130. In Div I men's foil, sophomore Gabe Foster was 151 in a field of 196. In a junior men's sabre field of 150, Connor Ritchey placed 35th, Matthew Garrelick 106th and Griffin Morehead T147th.
On Saturday, sophomore Diana Philpot tied for 46th in junior women's sabre (field of 109) and freshman Jason Xu was 84th in Division I men's epee (field of 286). In Div I women's foil, freshman Sydney Persing was 18th in a field of 152 for the highest women's finish of the weekend, and junior Amanda Lalezarian took 71st.
On Sunday, Garrelick returned to action and placed 11th in Div I men's sabre among a field of 166, providing the highest Carolina finish of the weekend. Ritchey was 139 in that field.
As competition wrapped up on Monday, Philpot fenced again, placing 54th in Div I women's sabre. Junior Sarah Hanvy tied for 77th.
