UNC Three Back After Two Rounds at Tar Heel Intercollegiate
October 8, 2016 | Men's Golf
Thomas Eldridge and Stephen Saleeby combined to shoot 4-under-par to lead UNCW to a three-shot lead after the first two rounds at the 2016 Tar Heel Intercollegiate men's golf tournament hosted by the University of North Carolina Friday at UNC Finley Golf Course.
The first two rounds were scheduled to be played on Saturday, but tournament officials moved the first 36 holes to Friday. The two rounds were played despite rain that fell for much of the day.
The third and final round will be played on Sunday beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
Patrick Cover is at even par and Thomas Lilly is 2-over for UNCW. The Seahawks led by two strokes after the first round after shooting a 7-under-par 281, then shot a 2-under 286 in the afternoon session. Preston Harrington helped UNCW get off to a fast start with an opening 68.
Carolina is second at 6-under 570, shooting 5-under in the morning and 1-under in round two. Senior Zach Martin is tied for fifth (72-69) at 3-under 141 in his first collegiate start. Joshua Martin is tied for eighth at 2-under 142 with matching 71s.
UNC freshman Austin Hitt leads the tournament with 31 pars and is tied for 13th at 1-under 143. William Register led UNC with a 3-under 69 in the first round and is even overall. Ben Griffin, who won the event in 2014, is tied for 55th.
Six teams are under par, including UNCW (-9), North Carolina (-6), UNCG (-3), Maryland (-3), Liberty (-2) and North Florida (1). UNCG had the best team round of the day with an 8-under-par 280 in the second round.
Coastal Carolina's Alfredo Ruiz and UNCG's Jake McGlone share the individual lead at 6-under 138. Ruiz shot 68-70; McGlone fired a 67 in the second round after an opening 71. Twenty-two players are under par and three more are at even par.
McGlone played the par 4s in 5-under-par, four strokes better than the rest of the field. UNC's Zach Martin and Jacksonville's Raul Pereda both were 5-under on the par 5s.
Carolina senior Henry Do, playing as an individual, birdied five consecutive holes (four through eight) and shot 68 to tie for the first round lead with Harrington, Eldridge and Ruiz. Do is 26th at plus-one.
“The Martin brothers (Zach and Joshua) led the way for us and played well in the wet conditions,” says UNC head coach Andrew Sapp. “We were glad to get all 36 holes in today before the brunt of the storm hits. We're looking forward to Sunday's final round and hope to play our best golf. We simply need some more putts to drop for us.”
