Watts Sets ACC 3FG Record In Win Over Charleston Southern
November 22, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Watts broke the ACC record set three previous times - twice by NC State's Jennifer Howard in the mid 1990s, and most recently by Wolfpack guard Myisha Goodwin-Coleman in 2013.
The 39 points scored by Watts ties for the fifth most in program history, and the most by a Tar Heel since Tracy Reid set the school record of 42 points vs. Virginia on Jan. 27, 1997.
As a team, North Carolina (4-0) also tied its own record with 14 made three-pointers.
Paris Kea continued her steady play with 13 points, while Jamie Cherry added 12 points and Destinee Walker scored 11.
After a tough shooting night on Sunday in a win over Bucknell, Carolina came out quickly making its first three shots on Tuesday. Watts had the first five points, and a bullet pass into the paint saw Hillary Fuller make it 7-2.
The shots continued to fall for the Heels, more specifically Watts who poured in 19 points in the opening quarter. She was 7-of-8 from the field, and made four of her five attempts from beyond the arc.
Watts slowed down a bit in the second quarter, but her club still led comfortable at intermission, 53-38. Kea contributed nine points, and Carolina shot 51.4 percent from the field.
Carolina continued to drain three-pointers into the second half. Taylor Koenen dialed one up from long distance, and Watts did the same, her 7th of the game, to take a 67-47 lead with exactly five minutes left in the third.
A three-pointer from Rachel Burns at the third-quarter buzzer pulled Charleston Southern within 74-62 with the final quarter left to sort this one out.
Bretcher would get CSU within 84-75 of the Tar Heels, but Watts' record setting triple with 3:18 left in regulation sealed the victory, keeping the Tar Heels unbeaten.
North Carolina heads to the Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam on the island of Bimini. The Tar Heels face USF on Thursday at 5:15 p.m.
