Elly Wagner Wins Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina fans at the Dean E. Smith Center for the recent men's basketball game against Wake Forest had another reason to cheer, beyond the Tar Heels' 83-68 win. At halftime of that game, on Jan. 20, some of the UNC Department of Athletics' top student-athletes, including softball senior Elly Wagner, were honored for outstanding scholarship and leadership.
A student-athlete from each varsity squad was honored with the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award, recognizing outstanding academic performance during his or her career at UNC. (Indoor and outdoor track were combined, for a total of 26 winners among Carolina's 28 varsity sports.)
Additionally, 18 student-athletes were recognized as recipients of this year's Leader of Distinction Awards, the highest honor bestowed by UNC's renowned Richard A. Baddour Carolina Leadership Academy.
Karley Rempel, a senior on the women's cross country and track & field teams, was the one student-athletes honored as part of both groups.
Those recognized as Athletic Director's Scholar-Athletes for 2015-16 were: Tyler Ramirez (baseball), Marcus Paige (men's basketball), Erika Johnson (women's basketball), Chris Madaffari (men's cross country), Karley Rempel (women's cross country), Jake Bernstein (men's fencing), Carly Wooten (women's fencing), Casey Di Nardo (field hockey), Nick Weiler (football), Davis Bateman (men's golf), Elizabeth Mallett (women's golf), Lexi Cappalli (gymnastics), Patrick Kelly (men's lacrosse), Carly Davis (women's lacrosse), Shelley Warner (rowing), Nick Williams (men's soccer), Hanna Gardner (women's soccer), Elly Wagner (softball), Sam Lewis (men's swimming & diving), Emma Nunn (women's swimming & diving), Connor Daly (men's tennis), Ashley Dai (women's tennis), Houston Summers (men's track & field), Lizzy Whelan (women's track & field), Paige Neuenfeldt (volleyball) and Alex Utley (wrestling).
