I'm A Tar Heel: Erika Johnson
February 10, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Dear fellow Tar Heels,
I am beyond grateful to be a part of this wonderful Tar Heel family. The love and hospitality I have felt through these years has been very much appreciated. My favorite part about being an athlete at the University of North Carolina is getting to know the fans, donors, administrators and everyone that facilitates our games. I love that they are excited to see us grow and succeed.
I knew from a young age that I wanted to play college basketball but I never thought I would end up here in Chapel Hill. I had heard from family friends who attended UNC how special this place is, but I never truly understood until I found myself 2,000 miles away from my Seattle home.
Coach Hatchell was gracious enough to offer me a scholarship for a second time when I was looking to transfer my freshman year. I arrived in January 2012, mid-year and mid-season, eager to help my new team and establish myself academically. Looking back now on all of my years as a Tar Heel, my most memorable experiences were our trips to Hawaii, Cancun, and California for tournaments, my trip to Italy for study abroad, and the last week of workouts every summer, with our strength coach Jason when I felt like I had conquered the world.
After working through several injuries, I'm glad I stuck around for a fifth year because I don¹t think I was truly ready to leave, but then again, who ever really is.
Thanks UNC for all the support and Southern cooking!
I'm Erika Johnson and I'm A Tar Heel!
