Greene, Godwin Earn All-ACC Honors In High Jump
February 27, 2016 | Track & Field
BOSTON – The University of North Carolina track and field teams wrapped up the second day of competition at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. The Tar Heels posted several personal bests and season-best times and marks throughout the day.
North Carolina had five underclassmen that scored or made it to the finals of their individual events and many more that competed at a high level among elite competition.
“It was a day filled with ups and downs,” head coach Harlis Meaders said. “Fortunately for us the women's team had a lot of ups with the young kids stepping up and performing well. I'm happy to see Katlin Sherman advance to the finals of the 200 as a true freshman. We're lucky to have Tainasha Vines get to the finals and score points for us in the long jump. Nicole Greene has had a fantastic season and to come in and finish second at the ACC meet as a true freshman is really good. That will keep her hungry and focused as we focus towards the NCAA Championships. A great job by Emily Godwin to get third after coming back from the pent. In the pole vault Amanda Benninghoff has continued to improve throughout the season and she out performed her entry standard coming in. Finishing fifth was a fantastic job. Freshman Anna Eaton competed really well. I think we're continuing to grow and getting better and better.
“For the men's program Joey Souza made the finals as a true freshman, something that's not common in our conference. Kenny Selmon made the finals ins the 60-meter hurdles at 8.01. We always felt like he could run sub-8.00 and he's getting closer to that. As we move forward to tomorrow we have the triple jump and mile relays where we feel like we can bang some heads.
Nicole Greene and Emily Godwin placed second and third in the women's high jump earning All-ACC honors. The pair topped 5-10 ¾ (1.80 meters) each to claim their respective spots. Godwin tied her personal best in the event.
Amanda Benninghoff cleared a personal best 13-4 ¼ (4.07 meters) in the pole vault to finish the competition in fifth place. That height ranks No. 3 all-time at UNC and is a personal record for Benninghoff. Anna Eaton took 11th in the competition.
Paul Haley took fifth in the men's heptathlon with 5,254 points. Haley set a PR in the 1000m portion of the event. Nick Futia added more than 200 points to his personal best in the heptathlon and finished 14th overall.
Tainasha Vines surprised some people by scoring points for the women's team in the long jump. Vines was in the first flight of the competition, but set a PR jumping 18-10 ½ (5.75 meters) to take the top spot in the first flight. Her mark was good enough to get into the final at No. 8 and that's where she ended the competition. Alexis Gannon finished 10th, just missing the finals by one spot.
Joey Souza also squeaked into the finals of the men's long jump at No. 9. Souza wasn't able to move up any further and finished ninth tying his season best at 23-7 ¼ (7.19 meters).
Kenny Selmon advanced to the final of the men's 60-meter hurdles. Selmon posted a PR in the event running 8.01. Selmon also took 12th in the 200 and could have possibly made the final, but his foot got caught coming out of the blocks.
Katlin Sherman advanced to the finals of the women's 200m with a time of 24.15.
Morgan Ilse set a PR in the women's mile, but her time wasn't fast enough to qualify for the final.
Kedrick Davis placed 10th in the men's 60m and was unable to advance to the finals.
Cierra Dunston finished 12th overall in the 400, but took first in her heat after finishing the first lap in fourth.
Natisha Dixon couldn't advance to the finals of the women's 60-meter Hurdles at 8.49.
The competition will conclude tomorrow with 10 women's events still to go and 11 men's events. The Tar Heel women are currently in third place with 32.5 points while the men's team is in 11th with 9 points. A recap of performances and results will be on GoHeels.com following the conclusion of the meet. Live results are available and ESPN 3 will broadcast the meet from 1-4 p.m.
