Shlimak's Bronze Highlights Day 1 Of ACC Championships

North Carolina sophomore Matthew Shlimak won the bronze medal in men's epee and the Tar Heel women finished third in the team competition Saturday in Day 1 of the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, being contested at Notre Dame's Castellan Family Fencing Center in the Joyce Center Fieldhouse.
Saturday featured the men's individual competition in the morning and the women's team competition in the afternoon. Notre Dame, which is ranked No. 2 in both the men's and women's polls, won the women's team competition and also swept the top spot in all three men's individual weapons.
In the individual men's competition and a rematch of last year's sabre title bout, Notre Dame's Jonah Shainberg defeated teammate Jonathan Fitzgerald, 15-12. Notre Dame's Axel Kiefer won the foil title with a 15-7 win over teammate Kristjan Archer. Notre Dame's Dylan French beat Duke's Dakota Nollner, 15-13, in the épée title bout. The top two finishers in each weapon earn All-ACC honors.
After Shlimak in epee, UNC's Michael Gopman Slonim was eighth, Jason Xu was 13th and Collins Allison was 15th. In foil, Alexander Burte was the top Tar Heel in 10th, Ezra Baeli-Wang was 11th, Harry Adams was 12th and Jake Bernstein was 14th. In sabre, Connor Ritchey took fifth, Matthew Garrelick ninth, Theophilus Onigbinde 10th and Turner Wibbelsman 15th.
In the team competition, the Fighting Irish went 3-0, beating Boston College (21-6), UNC (20-7), and Duke (20-7) en route to the championship.
Tar Heel Meredith Bozentka went 7-2 in women's sabre for the Tar Heel women's best individual performance of the day.
The championship will continue on Sunday with the women's individual competition followed by the men's team event. Live coverage on ESPN3 will start at 12:30 p.m.
