CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -Â Carolina fencing will head to Ardmore, Pennsylvania, for the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at the Haverford College Alumni Field House.
Â
The performance at the regional meet is important for qualification to the national championships and for potential NCAA Championships qualification for an individual. The criteria to earn a spot at the NCAA are weighted 60% of the fencer's performance at the regionals, and the other 40% comes from regular-season results. The individual champion from each region will earn an automatic berth into the national championships.
Â
Schedule:Â Competition begins at 9 a.m. with Round 1 pools in men's epee, women's epee, men's foil, and women's foil. Women's saber follows at 10:30 a.m., with men's saber slated for a 12 p.m. start.Â
The Field:Â No. 9/10 Penn State, Wagner, No. 4/3 Princeton, No.8/5 Duke, No. 8 Haverford (D3), No.7/8 Penn, No. 14 Temple, NJIT, Stevens, No. 7/8Drew (D3), No. 2 Johns Hopkins (D3), Lafayette, Fairleigh Dickinson.
For fans following the action, live results will be available via FencingTimeLive. Tickets for the event can be purchased via Temple's Athletic ticketing website, as Temple is hosting the competition.
The Last Time Out:Â The Tar Heels brought home medals from the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships. The men's team secured two gold medals and a silver as Peter Bruk and Youssef Shamel finished first in foil and sabre. Shamel was named the men's ACC most valuable fencer of the championship as a freshman.
On the women's side, Nicole Milewski added to the accomplishments with another silver medal, marking the second of her career.
