Louisville Holds Off Tar Heels
February 5, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Freshman Stephanie Watts led North Carolina (12-12, 2-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) with 16 points. Hillary Summers notched her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Destinee Walker added 12 points.
Moore scored 14 points in the second half to help Louisville (18-5, 10-0) to its 15th-straight win to remain unbeaten in the ACC heading into Sunday's clash with No. 3 Notre Dame, who also owns an unblemished 10-0 record in the league.
UofL freshman Asia Durr tied her career-high with 21 points off the bench. Myisha Hines-Allen added 19 points and 10 boards for the Cardinals.
Leading 32-28 at the half, the impressive play of the Tar Heels didn't stop in the third quarter. Carolina scored the first five points of the half, and later a Watts three-pointer had the home-standing Heels up 42-32.
But the Cardinals responded with an 18-4 run over a span of 3:34 for a 50-46 advantage, their first lead since it was 11-10 back in the first quarter.
The Cardinals didn't let up on the offensive end of the court, scoring 35 points alone in the third quarter, the most allowed by UNC in any quarter this season, to take a 63-52 lead heading to the fourth.
UofL extended its lead out to as many as 20 points late into the fourth quarter.
Looking unfazed by the red-hot Cardinals, Summers scored eight first-quarter points to give Carolina a 16-14 edge over Louisville after one period.
The Tar Heels continued to control tempo in the second quarter. Walker knocked down a pair of three-pointers, and Watts' runner had UNC up 26-18 with six minutes, 56 seconds left until halftime.
UofL was able to tie the game up on two occasions but were never able to take the lead. A pair of free throws by Watts secured a 32-28 lead for the Tar Heels at the half. Summers had 10 points to lead all scorers at intermission.
Carolina visits Boston College on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
