Several Tar Heels Take First At Dennis Craddock Relays
March 19, 2016 | Track & Field
CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina track and field programs completed the first day of the Dennis Craddock Carolina Relays with several Tar Heels taking first in their respective events.
“We're glad to be outside. The indoor season had its highs and lows,” head coach Harlis Meaders said. “Now we're in the outdoor season, it's like a fresh start. We had a small group competing the first day. The women's distance runners were running well for this early in the season. Stephen Mulherin did really well for us in the 3k. It was exciting to see Houston Summers go over 66 meters in the javelin and have his best opening throw. Zach Gray also had a PR and both should score well for us at the conference meet. Tomorrow we will have a senior recognition for our kids in the final home meet of the season and we'll see more kids on the track.”
The men's javelin competition was a strong showing by the collective group of Tar Heels competing. Houston Summers ended up taking first with a throw of 217-7 (66.32 meters) while Zach Gray took second with a personal best 205-1 (62.50 meters). Summers' throw ranks No. 2 in the NCAA this year. Paul Haley finished with a personal best of 168-4 (51.32 meters) and took fourth.
Tory Kemp earned first in the women's javelin at 113-3 (34.52 meters).
Stephen Mulherin took first place in the men's 3000m. Mulherin earned an outdoor PR in the event at 8:29.59. Chris Madaffari, Carl Geiger and Sam Miner finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
Morgan Ilse took second in the women's 3000m at 9:53.39, a great time for the freshman. Lizzy Whelan wasn't far behind in third at 9:59.69 while Mattie Webb took fourth at 10:03.28.
The Dennis Craddock Carolina Relays will continue tomorrow. A recap of performances and results from the meet will be on GoHeels.com following the conclusion of each day.
