Doubles Paces Tar Heels To Win Over Clemson
March 25, 2016 | Men's Tennis
With the win, Carolina improved to 19-1 on the year, 4-1 in ACC play. Clemson fell to 11-10 (2-4 ACC) heading into a match Sunday at NC State.
“We have a tough league and it's tougher as we go forward,” UNC coach Sam Paul said. “Virginia Tech is really under-ranked, no doubt about it. But we just take one match at a time.”
UNC quickly locked up the doubles point Friday, with senior Andrew Gores and freshman Anu Kodali winning 6-1 at No. 3. Senior Brett Clark and sophomore Robert, playing at No. 1, won by the same score, halting the No. 2 match with juniors Ronnie Schneider and Jack Murray up 5-2.
“I liked our focus in doubles,” Paul said. “I liked how we came out.”
Singles also went quickly, with all six matches ending in straight sets, five of those favoring the Tar Heels. Schneider, at No. 2, was the first to lock up a win, 6-1, 6-3 over Luke Johnson. Kelly, at No. 3, beat Daffra Sannon 6-1, 6-3 to put Carolina within a point of the victory. Murray, playing at No. 4, beat Austin Ansari 6-3, 6-2 to seal the win.
Kodali topped Robert Dudley 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 to put UNC up 5-0. Clemson then earned a point at No. 1, with Alex Farvot beating Clark 6-4, 6-2. Moments later, Boyden wrapped up the match with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Christian Harris at No. 6.
The Hokies won 5-2 at Duke on Friday to improve to 12-4 overall and 4-2 in ACC play heading to Chapel Hill. “Virginia Tech is very good and very under-ranked,” Paul said. “We're just trying to get better every day – we talk about that a lot.”
