Blueberry Patch Work Day Deemed A Success
April 10, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors gathered at the University of North Carolina women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell's cabin near Black Mountain for her annual Lineberger Cancer Center blueberry patch work day.
Volunteers congregated early Saturday morning to weed, hoe, and spread mulch around Coach Hatchell's 250 blueberry plants. Come July, the fruit of their labors will pay off in an anticipated bumper crop of blueberries as folks come from near and far to pick at Hatchell's blueberry patch.
In lieu of payment for the berries, Coach Hatchell relies on the honor system and asks pickers to send donations to UNC's Lineberger Cancer Center in Chapel Hill.
