UNC Fends Off Wake Forest In ACC Quarters
April 22, 2016 | Women's Tennis
North Carolina (27-2) made it a clean sweep of all three doubles matches to open the day with an early 1-0 advantage over the Demon Deacons, who lost 7-0 to UNC earlier this spring in Chapel Hill.
Senior Ashley Dai continued her strong play in recent weeks on court six with a 6-1, 6-2 disposal of Luisa Fernandez to give Carolina a 2-0 edge and a step closer to reaching Saturday's semifinal match.
Down 3-1 in the first set, All-ACC selection Jessie Aney surrendered one game the rest of the way on court three to notch a 6-3, 6-2 win over fellow freshman Anna Ulyashchenko, lifting Carolina to a 3-0 advantage over Wake. Ranked No. 57 nationally, Aney remains unbeaten against the ACC in dual matches this season.
Wake Forest (19-9) trimmed its deficit to 3-1 with a Emma Davis win over No. 39 Whitney Kay on court two, however, Carter stepped her game up at the most critical time of the match to secure another Tar Heel victory. Up a set and 4-4 in the second, Carter broke her opponent, 64th-ranked Kimmy Guerin, and then served out the set to win 7-5, 6-4, to run her record to a staggering 41-4 in 2016.
North Carolina will face fifth seed Virginia on Saturday at 10 a.m. in a semifinal match at Cary Tennis Park on ESPN3.
