Carolina Closes Strong In Weekend Meets
April 24, 2016 | Track & Field
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of North Carolina track and field teams closed the Virginia Challenge and Georgia Tech Invite with strong performances from many individuals. Three different Tar Heels earned first place in their events while many more set personal records and season best times and marks.
“We leave the meet having accomplished many of the things that we wanted to do,” head coach Harlins Meaders said. We leave with a clearer picture of what we need to do over the next few weeks. Our medical staff of Taylor, Samantha, and Mrs. Levey did a fantastic job this weekend. We are very fortunate to have them as well as a terrific group of volunteer coaches and administrative support helping us with our student athletes.
“Josette Norris continued to shine and had an exciting race leading to personal best by about 4 seconds and Karley Rempel returned to the track with a very gutsy performance. On the men's side Houston Summers added another good series of throws to what is turning out to be a very good senior year for him. AJ Hicks demonstrated that he is one of the most versatile throwers in recent history for the team. The men's 4x400 teamed highlighted by a terrific performance by Cory Nicholls.”
Kenny Selmon took first and inched his name a little higher on the national leaderboard in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Selmon ran 50.49, a season best, to take first overall. He ranks ninth nationally in the event. Javonte Lipsey took fifth in the event.
Carolina went 1-2 in the men's long jump with Paul Haley taking first and Joey Souza finishing second. Haley, a decathlete, set a personal record in the event at 24-3 ½ (7.40 meters). Souza wasn't far off in second with a best jump of 24-1 ½ (7.35 meters). Haley's mark is also the best of any Carolina athlete this year.
AJ Hicks can tally another collegiate victory, this time in the shot put. Hicks threw 55-11 ¼ (17.05 meters) to take first. It's the farthest that Hicks has thrown in two years.
The men's 4x400 relay finished third at 3:08.66.
Houston Summers took fourth in the men's javelin invite where he threw 223-4 (68.07 meters). Summers had the second best throw of all collegians in the field.
Taking fifth in the women's long jump was Tainasha Vines with a best jump of 19-4 ¾ (5.91 meters). Also making the finals in the event was Alexis Gannon who took eighth at 19-3 ¾ (5.87 meters).
Josette Norris had a career best 4:23.95 in the 1,500.
Caroline Alcorta finished 12th in the women's 5,000 at 16:19.42.
In Atlanta at the Georgia Tech Invite, Natisha Dixon ran 13.73 to take fourth in the women's 100-meter hurdles. That time is a career best for Dixon.
Nicole Greene finished second in the women's high jump, but was the top collegian in the field.
Cierra Dunston ran 54.55 in the 400 to finish seventh overall.
Katlin Sherman took sixth in the women's 200 with a time of 24.55.
