Three Fencers Earn All-ACC Academic Honors

Three North Carolina fencers have been named to the 2016 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team, as announced by the conference. Freshman Matthew Garrelick and sophomore Matthew Shlimak were named to the men's team and sophomore Meredith Bozentka was named to the women's team. All three earned the honor for the first time.
Garrelick, who is from Cedar Grove, N.J., fences sabre for the Tar Heels and is majoring in mathematical decision sciences. He reached the 2016 NCAA Championships and finished 22nd overall.
Shlimak, from Houston, Texas, fences epee and is majoring in economics. He was UNC's top individual finisher at ACC Championships, placing third.
Bozentka, from Philadelphia, Pa., fences sabre and is majoring in biology. She qualified for the NCAA Championships this season for the first time and finished 11th overall.
The awards are based on both athletic and academic performances. Honorees must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and a 3.0 GPA in the previous semester to be considered.
Notre Dame junior Garrett McGrath was named the ACC Men's Fencing Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Boston College senior Olivia Adranga was named the ACC Women's Fencing Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
