Lexi Harkins Leads Tar Heels in Bryan National Collegiate

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C.—The University of North Carolina women's golf team completed the Bryan National Collegiate on Sunday in 10th place. Carolina was 23-over on the day and 53-over for the tournament.
Kelly Whaley paced the team with a 3-over par 75 in the final round. She finished the tournament 14-over and tied for 35th. Elizabeth Mallett was 6-over par on the day and 20-over par for the tournament. Lexi Harkins had the best tournament for the Tar Heels. Harkins finished 10-over par for the tournament and tied for 16th. Leslie Cloots shot 9-over par in the final round tied for 22nd at 11-over. Bryana Nguyen posted a 7-over par 79 to finish 31-over.
Rachel Jones competing as an individual shot a 6-over par 78 in the final round and finished 35 over par for the tournament.
Virginia took first in the field of 15 teams with a 24-over 888. Trailing closely were South Carolina and Florida State with a 30-over 894 and a 32-over 896, respectively. Wake Forest finished in lone fourth with a 37-over 901, while Notre Dame and Kentucky tied for fifth with a 45-over 909.
South Carolina's Sarah Schmelzel topped the player leaderboard with a 3-over 219. In a three way tie for second was Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest, Matilda Castren of Florida State and Katelyn Dambaugh of South Carolina with a 5-over 221. Virginia's Lauren Coughlin and Elizabeth Szokol tied for fifth, and East Carolina's F. Gustafsson Spang finished seventh with a 7-over 223.
"It is frustrating to have the team performing well in practice and qualifying, playing well in the practice round and then not being able to execute in the same manner during the tournament," said head coach Jan Mann. "We have two weeks to prepare for the ACC's and we will work hard to be prepared and perform as I know they can."
Next up for the Tar Heels is the ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C. on Apr. 15-17. The tournament will be played at the Sedgefield Country Club. Last year, North Carolina finished third.
