Moran Gets MLB Call From Houston
May 17, 2016 | Baseball
Former North Carolina All-America third baseman Colin Moran has been called up to the Major Leagues by the Houston Astros and will join the team Tuesday night to face the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Moran, the 2011 National Freshman of the Year and a consensus first-team All-American in 2013, was picked No. 6 overall in the 2013 MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins before being traded to the Astros in 2014.
Moran is set to become the 64th Tar Heel to reach Major League Baseball and the eighth current player from the program. He is the first Carolina product to make the big leagues since Mike Morin debuted with the Los Angeles Angels on April 30, 2014.
Moran, the nephew of former UNC great and MLB standout B.J. Surhoff, hit .346 in three seasons in Chapel Hill. In leading Carolina to a school-record 59 wins and a College World Series appearance in 2013, Moran hit .345 with 13 home runs and a school-record 91 RBIs. He became the seventh player in program history to earn ACC Player of the Year honors that season.
