Delamora Earns Second ACC Player Of The Week Award
May 2, 2016 | Softball
GREENSBORO - Carolina freshman Berlynne Delamora was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Tar Heels to a perfect week against No. 18 Notre Dame and Campbell. It is the second weekly award for the Tar Heel third baseman, as she also earned the honor on April 4 after phenomenal performances against USC Upstate, UNCG and Louisville.
Monday's award is the fifth overall for the Tar Heels this season, as junior Kendra Lynch has earned two ACC Pitcher of the Week nods while Kristen Brown was the first Tar Heel to earn ACC Player of the Week honors this year.
Delamora batted .750 in the pair of UNC victories, reaching base in all-but-one plate appearance. She slugged 2.250 with two game-changing home runs and six RBIs. The Hacienda Hieghts, California, native reached base all three times against No. 18 Notre Dame on Monday night, launching a three-run home run in the third inning to give UNC a 4-2 lead and help the Tar Heels win two out of three against the nationally-ranked Irish. The rookie in the hot corner displayed her power yet again on Wednesday against Campbell, drilling a two-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Tar Heels back the lead, 6-5. She then added some insurance with a sixth-inning RBI single. Additionally, she was flawless in the field with six assists and two putouts at third base.
"She is just steady," said head coach Donna J. Papa. "She's very confident and she does her job. Somehow, she finds a way to put the bat on the ball. Recently, bat on the ball over the fence. She's got a great future ahead and she's going to do nothing but get better. She's so coachable, she listens to everything you say, and has great poise in the box no matter what the situation is. I'm excited about her future. She's just a great quality kid that has really good fiber.”
In addition to Delamora, two other ACC student-athletes earned weekly honors. Florida State third baseman Jessica Warren shared the honor with Delamora as ACC Co-Player of the Week, while Bost College's Allyson Frei was named ACC Pitcher of the Week.
Warren earned ACC Player of the Week recognition for the second time in a row and was dominant at the plate in a perfect 4-0 week for the Seminoles. The sophomore third baseman batted .562 (9-for-16) with nine RBI and seven runs scored, along with two doubles and three home runs. The Tampa, Florida, native posted multiple hits in three of the four games on the week, including a pair of three-hit performances in an ACC series sweep of Pitt on April 30-May 1. For the week, she posted a slugging percentage of 1.250 and had an on-base percentage of .611. She was perfect in 12 defensive chances and now leads the ACC with 61 runs batted in and 54 runs scored on the season.
Frei delivered another solid week on the mound, posting a 1.00 ERA in three appearances, with two wins, including one complete game and a shutout. She struck out 15 batters in her 14.0 innings pitched while allowing 10 hits and only two earned runs. Following her seven-inning effort in a 5-0 road win at Syracuse, the sophomore from Branchville, New Jersey, has now thrown 20.1 consecutive scoreless innings in ACC play, striking out 26 and allowing just six hits in that span.
After a break for final exams, the Tar Heels return to action on May 7 for the final series of the regular season. UNC heads south to Atlanta for a three-game ACC series at Georgia Tech beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. The weekend concludes with a doubleheader on Sunday, May 8, at 1 p.m., with both of Sunday's games being streamed live on ESPN3.
