Three Tar Heels Earn All-ACC Honors
May 23, 2016 | Baseball
GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Junior center fielder Tyler Ramirez and sophomore pitcher J.B. Bukauskas were named to the All-ACC second team, league officials announced Monday. Junior pitcher Zac Gallen was a third-team selection for the Tar Heels, who finished the regular season tied for 10th with Wake Forest.
Ramirez had his finest season as a Tar Heel in 2016, leading the team in a number of offensive categories, including home runs, walks, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. The Suffolk, Virginia, product hit .333 during the regular season with eight long balls and 47 RBIs while playing high-level defense in center. Ramirez started all 30 ACC regular season games and hit a team-best .317 with five homers and 25 RBIs.
Bukauskas proved to be one of the nation's best power pitchers during his sophomore campaign. The right-hander from Ashburn, Virginia, struck out a league-best 111 batters in 13 regular-season starts. He posted a 7-2 record with a 3.10 ERA in 78.1 innings of work. Bukauskas was even better during league play, finishing 6-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 66.0 innings.
Gallen continued to be a rock on Friday nights for Carolina during his junior season. The Gibbsboro, New Jersey, right-hander was 5-6 with a team-best 2.68 ERA in 13 starts. He posted 95 strikeouts against just 21 walks and limited opponents to a .213 batting average. Gallen was a three-time ACC Pitcher of the Week, and his complete-game, 13-strikeout shutout against Virginia Tech earned him National Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Clemson outfielder Seth Beer was voted the ACC Player and Freshman of the Year by the league's head baseball coaches, becoming the first player in ACC history to earn both honors in a single season.
Louisville junior Drew Harrington was voted the ACC Pitcher of the Year, while the Cardinals' Dan McDonnell was selected as the ACC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
