UNC Scoring Spree Silences Tribe
September 21, 2016 | Men's Soccer
North Carolina (6-1) broke out of a mini scoring slump by scoring a season-high four goals, after being limited to only two goals in its previous three matches.
In the third minute, the Tribe's top scorer, Tanner Shane, hit the post on a half-volley attempt that nearly put the Tar Heels in an early hole on the road.
But Carolina wound up getting the first goal when Jeremy Kelly scored on a first-touch pass from Zach Wright, who beat his defender down the right side, got to the byline and found a streaking Kelly directly in front of the goal area for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
It was the first goal for Kelly, who made his first start as a Tar Heel in his freshman season.
Wright quickly advanced the lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute. A delivery from Alex Comsia into the box was collected by freshman Jelani Pieters and he gave a pass to Wright, who took one step to his left and deposited his third goal of the season into the far-right corner of the goal.
William Eskay cut the lead in half for the Tribe with a 30-yard blast that skipped off the wet grass to make it 2-1 in the 21st minute.
The end-to-end action slowed down after the William & Mary goal, and Carolina went into intermission with the advantage, up 2-1.
In the second half, Alan Winn carved out space in the midfield with his speed and offered up a pass to Tucker Hume. He ran onto the ball and one-touched home a left-footed shot for his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 56th minute.
The Tar Heels later cemented their victory in the 72nd minute. Cam Lindley began the play from a corner kick that was played out to Colton Storm. The team captain then crossed a ball that Walker Hume headed in to make it 4-1.
Carolina is back home this Friday to host No. 16 Boston College at 7 p.m.
