Bruening Scores Four Goals In Rout Of BC
September 24, 2016 | Men's Soccer
Bruening wound up the most goals scored by a Carolina player since Ryan Kneipper tied the school record with five goals against Winthrop on Nov. 22, 2002.
Alan Winn scored the fifth and final goal for North Carolina, who improved to 7-1 on the season and a perfect 3-0 against the ACC.
Bruening came off the bench for the first time all season and responded with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart that put the Tar Heels in full control of the match in the first half.
Winn found the byline and delivered a pass to the front step of the Eagle goal that Bruening first touched in the 33rd minute.
Moments later with Winn coming coming from the middle of the field this time, a pass was sent to Nico Melo on the right flank and he crossed his ball to an oncoming Bruening for a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute.
BC put its first shot on frame just over a minute later, but UNC keeper James Pyle made a diving save to his right to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. Pyle came up with six key saves to record his fifth clean sheet of 2016.
Still ahead by two goals, Carolina slammed the door shut on Boston College (5-3, 1-2) with three goals in a stretch of two minutes, 57 seconds late in the match.
Zach Wright found Bruening in the 82nd minute. Just 67 seconds later, Bruening scored his fourth goal when his shot ricocheted of the far post, with assists from freshman Jack Skahan and Wright.
Freshman Jeremy Kelly setup Winn for the final tally, a blast into the top left corner for his second goal of the season.
Carolina visits No. 1 Syracuse next Friday at 7 p.m.
