Carolina Signs Two-Sport Star Claudia Dickey
November 15, 2017 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina women's basketball team has added Claudia Dickey during the fall signing period, announced Wednesday by Hall of Fame head coach Sylvia Hatchell. A two-sport star from Charlotte, North Carolina, Dickey will participate in both soccer and basketball for the Tar Heels beginning in fall 2018.
All-Star Girls Report ranks Dickey the No. 40 overall basketball player in her signing class.
"I want to win a national championship in both sports and Chapel Hill was the school to give me that opportunity," said Dickey. "I've grown up a Tar Heel fan and wouldn't want it any other way. Honestly, it's a dream come true."
Dickey joins the previously announced signees Shayla Bennett and Jhileiya Dunlap, a pair of junior college All-Americans at Gulf State College.
"We are delighted that Claudia is a part of our Carolina family," said Hatchell. "Playing dual sports at a major Division I school is admirable. Claudia has the skills and abilities to be outstanding in both basketball and soccer. She has a great basketball IQ, great court awareness and the quickness and skills to play all three guard spots. Her mental toughness and leadership speaks volumes."
Dickey has excelled in both sports at Charlotte Latin School and also with Charlotte Soccer Academy. She was the 2017 N.C. Soccer Coaches Association girls player of the year, and has spent significant time with the US Women's National Team program.
"We are excited to have Claudia join the Carolina family," said UNC head women's soccer coach Anson Dorrance. "We know she is going to have a major impact on both programs. Her goalkeeping reflects her basketball background in the most positive ways from dominating crosses to her fabulous distribution. She is also a verbal leader that is critical to the success of any team. We feel on the soccer side of her career, the sky is the limit."
