Carolina Opens Season Friday With Hampton

CHAPEL HILL - The season officially gets underway on Friday afternoon when North Carolina takes on Hampton inside the friendly confines of Carmichael Arena at 3:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra and the ESPN app.

SERIES HISTORY
Carolina is 1-0 all-time against Hampton. The only previous meeting took place during the 1998-99 season when the Tar Heels earned a 93-50 win at home over the Pirates.
LAST TIME OUT
Preseason All-ACC guard Paris Kea put her terrific all-around game on display Monday night in leading North Carolina to a 102-47 victory over Mount Olive in an exhibition women's basketball game from Carmichael Arena.
Kea had a game-high 22 points and eight assists, and also hauled in seven rebounds and had six steals in 30 minutes of work. Senior Jamie Cherry and freshman Janelle Bailey each tossed in 16 points with Bailey adding nine boards.
The balanced attack continued with 13 points from Jocelyn Jones and Jaelynn Murray, and 12 more from Taylor Koenen. Murray registered a double-double with 12 rebounds to go with her baker's dozen point total.
FASTBREAK POINTS
• UNC is recieving votes in the Preseason AP Top25 poll, the sixth most among teams with a vote.
• UNC head coach Sylvia Hatchell is only 10 wins shy of 1,000 career victories.
• Paris Kea averaged 20.0 points in the two warmup games, while Jamie Cherry (18.5), Taylor Koenen (15.5) and Janelle Baily (14.0) all averaged in double figures as well.
• Junior guards Paris Kea and Stephanie Watts were named to the Preseason All-ACC Team. UNC joins Duke, Louisville and Notre Dame as the four ACC teams to have multiple players on the preseason team.
• Freshman center Janelle Bailey was selected to the five-player ACC Newcomer Watch List.

• Jamie Cherry will play in her 99th straight game in the season opener on Friday against Hampton. She has not missed a game in her collegiate career.
