Griffin Tied for Second at ACCs
April 21, 2017 | Men's Golf
University of North Carolina junior Ben Griffin shot a 32 on his final nine holes and finished the first round of the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Friday with a 5-under 67 at the Musgrove Mill Golf Course.
Griffin, a Chapel Hill native, is tied for second with Florida State's Cristobal Del Solar a single stroke behind Clemson's Bryson Nimmer, who opened with a 66. Griffin began his round with a bogey five on the 10th hole, his only blemish of the day. He birdied the 13th hole to get back to even par, then birdied 16 and made the turn at 1-under.
Griffin birdied the third, fifth, sixth and ninth holes to post a front-side 32 and conclude the round at 5-under 67.
The 67 is Griffin's low round of the season (his previous low was a 68 at the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational). Griffin has shot in the 60s six times this season, including four of his last five rounds.
The Tar Heels are ninth after round one with a 7-over-par 295. Jose Montaño, who had one of the day's only two eagles, shot an ever-par 72, William Register shot 77, Henry Do had a 79 and freshman Austin Hitt an 81.
"Ben played a wonderful round of golf today and Jose played a very good round, too," says UNC head coach Andrew Sapp. "We are looking forward to a good day tomorrow to move up the leaderboard. We have a lot of golf left and can make a big move tomorrow."
Duke leads with an 11-under 277, one shot ahead of Florida State and two clear of Clemson. Those are the only three teams below par for the opening 18 holes.
The ACC has changed the Championship schedule due to the potential for inclement weather on Sunday. The teams will play the second and third round on Saturday.
