McGee Lifts No. 3 Tar Heels To Third Straight Walk-Off Win
May 10, 2017 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL --- Ashton McGee's RBI double in the 10th gave No. 3 North Carolina a 7-6 win over Davidson Tuesday evening at Boshamer Stadium. The victory is Carolina's seventh in a row, its fifth consecutive comeback win and a third straight in walk-off fashion. The Tar Heels, who drew a season-high 16 walks on the day, scored three times in the ninth before McGee's game-winning hit in the 10th.
UNC (38-9) trailed 2-0 after two batters on Will Robertson's two-run homer off Tyler Baum in the top of the first. Robertson added a solo shot in the third to make it 3-1, and the Wildcats (24-22) added to their lead with two more long balls in the late innings.
Meanwhile, Davidson starter Josh Hudson was effectively wild, holding the Tar Heels without a hit through 5.2 frames despite issuing eight walks. Carolina finally broke through in the seventh when Brandon Riley doubled off Z.J. Zabinski and scored on McGee's single to left.
But the hosts still trailed 6-3 going into the ninth after Jake Sidwell and Cam Johnson homered off Brett Daniels in the seventh and eighth, respectively.
The game-tying rally started with a pair of walks by Davidson closer Westin Whitmire. After a Zack Gahagan sac fly made it 6-4, Carolina strung together three consecutive two-out singles to tie the game. Adam Pate singled through the left side to score McGee before Brian Miller kept the game going with an 0-2 single. After fouling off three 2-2 pitches from Whitmire, Logan Warmoth singled through the right side to plate Pate and tie the game.
Josh Hiatt (3-1) needed just seven pitches in a 1-2-3 10th before two more walks fueled the final push. After Dan Spear (0-1) walked Kyle Datres on seven pitches, Riley took a five-pitch walk from Cody White to put the winning run in scoring position. McGee then drove a 2-1 offering into the left center gap to set off another Tar Heel celebration in a season that has seen plenty.
Carolina will conclude its eight-game homestand Wednesday at 6 p.m. when the Tar Heels host UNC Asheville.
