Three Tar Heels Earn Academic All-District Honors
May 26, 2017 | Track & Field, Academics
The awards recognize outstanding performance in both academics and athletics and include competitors in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. Howard was honored for the fourth time in her UNC career, Godwin for the third and Alowonle for the first.
Alowonle is from Cottage Grove, Minn., and graduated from UNC earlier this month. He majored in business administration and represented his team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council. A five-time ACC champion, he placed third in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2017 ACC Outdoor Championships to qualify for that event at this weekend's NCAA East Preliminary. He is also competing as part of the 4x400 relay, seeking a return to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in his final season.
Godwin, from Buckhannon, W.Va., is a five-time All-ACC honoree. Although she's a senior academically, she has one more year to compete and is working toward a double major in business administration and biology. She has been named to the All-ACC Academic team five times, including the 2017 indoor season. Currently second in school history in the pentathlon and third in heptathlon, she is part of the Honors Carolina program and the Buckley Public Service Scholars program.
Howard graduated from UNC earlier this month with a double major in biology and religion. She was selected as a Top 10 Scholar-Athlete, recognizing her grade point average as one of the 10 highest among graduating seniors. Like Alowonle, she is competing at the NCAA East Preliminary this weekend, seeking to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in shot put for the third time. All-ACC in the 2017 indoor season, she is a seven-time All-ACC Academic honoree and has been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa honors society.
