October 12, 2018 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – Despite playing in front of their largest crowd of the season with 6,043 fans in attendance, the Tar Heels were unable to overcome sixth-ranked Pittsburgh on Friday evening in the Smith Center.
Skylar Wine and Destiny Cox led North Carolina (5-11, 1-6 ACC) with eight kills apiece. However, the Panthers (19-0, 7-0 ACC) balanced their attack between three with double-digit kills. Hunter Atherton tallied five clean kills will assisting 19. Mia Fradenburg posted a team-best eight digs.
North Carolina limited two-time ACC Player of the Week, Kayla Lund, who averages 4.10 kills per set, to five kills throughout the match. However, she managed a match-best 13 digs while Angela Seman collected 12. Chinaza Ndee led the way for Pitt's attack with 12 kills, hitting .733 while Stephanie Williams and Nika Markovic posted 10 each.
After Pitt jumped to an early lead, the two squads battled so that neither team scored more than two consecutive points. However, the Panthers' 9-1 run to begin the match was enough to secure the set. Freshmen Bell and Cox connected for back-to-back kills to give UNC some momentum. Cox posted three kills in the set while Wine, Atherton and Bell logged two apiece. But it was not enough for the set one win as Pitt earned the 25-13 decision.
The Tar Heels took a narrow lead to begin set two thanks to a Fradenburg ace and block by Bell and Cox. North Carolina and Pitt kept the second set within two until the Panthers took an 11-8 lead. UNC answered back with a 4-0 run for the 12-11 edge as Pitt took its first timeout. Cox tacked on four more kills in the frame with Wine posting three. The Panthers responded run of their own that would be enough to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-17 set score.
Transitioning to a 6-2, the Tar Heels hit a clean .500 to begin the set but they were unable to maintain it as Pittsburgh posted 18 kills in the frame. The Tar Heels went on an 4-1 run after the media timeout that included a kill by Aristea Tontai and a solo block by Bell. Both Kendra Koetter and Annabelle Archer made appearances in the final set in Carolina's rotation. Ndee closed out the match with a 7-for-7 attack to earn Pitt the 25-16 win and the three-set win.
