Carolina Drops Sunday Matinee to Virginia
October 14, 2018 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – Despite a career day from Hadden LaGarde, North Carolina stumbled against Virginia, falling in three sets Sunday afternoon in Carmichael Arena. LaGarde slugged six error-less kills in her collegiate debut, good for a .600 attack percentage.
The Cavaliers (6-12, 2-6 ACC) capitalized on UNC (5-12, 1-7 ACC) miscues en route to their second conference win this fall. UVA's Sarah Billiard posted a match-best 12 kills, hitting .500. Additionally, Chino Anukwuem logged eight kills and pair of solo blocks.
Just behind LaGarde, Ava Bell tallied five kills. Defensively, Greer Moseman and Mia Fradenburg collected eight digs. However, both Hoos Christine Jarman and Alex Spencer had double-digit digs.
After an even start to the match, Virginia went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. UNC responded with three-straight points to force the Cavaliers to take a timeout. Bell and Cox paced the Tar Heels with three kills apiece. But a five-point run capped off by an Anukwuem solo block closed out the set clinched and the 25-16 frame for the Cavaliers.
Thanks to a trio of blocks UVA jumped to an early 8-2 lead before Carolina called a timeout. The Tar Heels' offense struggled to get going as UNC scattered six kills among five hitters in the set. Virginia continued to extend its lead with another six-point run. Maddie Grace Hough sailed an ace to the back pin to give the Tar Heels some life late in the frame but it was not enough as the Hoos took a two-set lead, 25-12.
LaGarde started the third set for the Tar Heels with her first career kill. After tying the set at 5-5, Carolina jumped to a 14-8 lead with a trio of kills by LaGarde. However, the Cavaliers knotted it back up at 15-all. Back-to-back kills by Skylar Wine tied it back up at 18-18. UVA reclaimed the lead thanks to a pair of kills by Anukwuem and never looked back. The Cavaliers won the set, 25-22 for their first win over UNC since 2008.
Up next, North Carolina travels to Syracuse and Boston College Friday and Sunday, respectively. UNC returns home Nov. 2 and 4 to face Duke and Wake Forest.
