UNC-Virginia Quotes
October 27, 2018 | Football
UNC Head Coach Larry Fedora
Opening Statement:
"We'll start off by giving Bronco, his staff and that Virginia team a lot of credit for the job that they did today. They played extremely well and got a win. It's always tough to go on the road and get a win in the ACC, and these guys are kind of in control of their own destiny right now in the Coastal [Division]. They made the plays that they needed to make today to win the football game."
On UNC's offensive struggles:
"Well, I'm going to say all the way through the game we weren't consistent running the ball. I don't know what our first-down efficiency was, but I don't think it was very good. The drives that we had were successful, where we would pick up first downs and get our tempo going, we looked like an offense. Other than that, the majority of the time we were in third and long situations, because we weren't efficient on first down. We have to run the ball efficiency to be successful."
On the team's demeanor at halftime:
"The guys were pretty much like they always were at halftime. They know it's a 60- minute battle. They know once we come in at half, they put that one behind them and know they have 30 more minutes to fight. Every game we've been in it at halftime, in most of the games I should say. We just didn't make enough plays in the second half."
On containing UVA quarterback, Bryce Perkins:
"He's a good football player. He can run. He can really run and it makes you do some things that open up some things in the passing game. You have to worry about caging and containing him in a pass rush. You're really not trying to get sacks as much as you are trying not to let him get out. He's a good football player. He really is. He's done a good job. He can really run. There were times there when he got out on the edge, and we have some guys that can run, and he outran them."
UNC Players
Junior QB Nathan Elliott
On offensive rhythm and running on first down:
"We tried to start at a fast tempo. We had a couple of good runs and that got us rolling. You know its first down, if you don't get that first positive play its hard to build tempo, and we want to build tempo. If you don't get a positive play, then you're sitting in second and long and you're trying to go fast, but there's a little more thought process involved, or you'll be in a third and long. It really comes out of being efficient on the first down."
On performance of wide receivers:
"I thought they did a great job, blocking and catching. I'm really proud of them"
On whether the physicality of the game affected the team:
"Not really, they hit me a couple times but it wasn't that bad. I thought our guys played really physical and I thought our line did a great job. We just have to run the ball better and make more throws."
Junior Safety Myles Dorn
On how to defend against a player like Bryce Perkins:
"You just have to account for him, he's the extra guy. It's easy to forget he can run too."
On the toughest challenges from the game:
"We need to improve on communication. It's hard to tell right now, have to watch the film."
On the nature of this loss when compared to closer loses against Syracuse and Virginia Tech:
"Virginia was the better team today. They performed better today. They played with more swagger than we did, they just play with more of an itch. They were more ready."
On the explanation for the lack of scoring in second half:
"I have no idea. I wish I knew."
