Carolina Falls At Colorado
November 18, 2018 | Women's Basketball
BOULDER, Colorado - A combined 49 points from Annika Jank and Kennedy Leonard lifted Colorado to an 86-74 victory over the North Carolina women's basketball team on Sunday from the CU Events Center.
Janelle Bailey led North Carolina (3-1) with a season-high 26 points, her sixth career game with 20 or more points. Bailey also hauled in 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Shayla Bennett had 18 points.
UNC scored the first seven points to importantly get going early against a fellow Power 5 team on the road. Taylor Koenen's turn-around jumper forced a Buffaloes timeout moments later with Carolina leading 11-1 just two minutes, 48 seconds into the game.
UNC's good fortune stalled out after missing 10 of its next 11 shots. CU took full advantage of the poor shooting by going ahead for the first time at 17-15, and held a 26-19 lead after 10 minutes.
Bennett's three-point play midway into the second quarter got Carolina within two, 32-30. However, Colorado (3-0) gradually built its lead back to as many as 13 points in the first half. Leonard's 18 points - one point shy of her season average - paced the Buffaloes to a 49-41 edge at halftime.
Bailey led UNC with 15 points but had to sit the final 4:38 after picking up her third foul.
CU's shooting proved too much to handle on Sunday for the Heels, who made their first trip west of the Mississippi River since Oklahoma State in 2015.
Leonard's old-fashioned three-point play made it 65-49 Buffaloes. UNC cut its debt to a dozen by scoring the first seven points of the fourth quarter. A bucket from Bailey got Carolina within, 83-69, but the Tar Heels were unable to make the comeback against the Buffaloes for the second year in a row.
Last season, Carolina fell behind by 18 points when it hosted Colorado in Chapel Hill, but rallied to win 87-80 in overtime.
Redshirt junior guard Destinee Walker appeared in a game for the first time since 2017. She played four minutes and scored one point.
Carolina heads to the Paradise Jam next week in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Tar Heels will face UCLA, No. 21 USF and Kentucky Nov. 22-24.
