Kea Selected To Wade Trophy Watch List
November 20, 2018 | Women's Basketball
ATLANTA — North Carolina senior guard Paris Kea is a candidate for the 2019 Wade Trophy presented to the best player in college women's basketball, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Tuesday.
Kea is also included on watch lists for the John R. Wooden Award and the Naismith, both national player of the year awards. Kea is on the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch list for the nation's top point guard.
The Greensboro, North Carolina, native is averaging 15.5 points through four games. Kea scored a season-high 25 points against Kent State on Nov. 9.
The Wade Trophy — now in its 42nd year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.
The "Wade Watch" list of candidates for the Wade Trophy is composed of players selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Selection Committee. The committee will review the list in January to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2018-19 season.
North Carolina will compete in the Paradise Jam over Thanksgiving week with games against UCLA, No. 17 USF and Kentucky, Nov. 22-24 in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
