Team Effort Tops UCLA, 83-49

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands - All five starters reached double figures for North Carolina in its most lopsided victory of the season, 83-49, over UCLA at day one of the Paradise Jam from the Sports & Fitness Center at the University of the Virgin Islands.
Janelle Bailey led North Carolina (4-1) with 20 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double in as many games. Paris Kea offered up 15 points and five assists, while Stephanie Watts had 14 points. Shayla Bennett and Taylor Koenen had 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Kennedy Burke had a game-high 21 points for UCLA, who fell to 3-2 on the season. The Tar Heels have beaten the Bruins three times in the last six seasons and hold a 6-4 edge in the series.
Carolina used a pair of key runs to hold the lead for all but 14 seconds in the first half. A 12-0 spurt broke open an 8-8 tie in the first quarter. The Tar Heels knocked down 10 of its 18 shots to lead 25-19 after 10 minutes.
The UNC defense stepped up in the second stanza, limiting UCLA to only 11 points. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels scored the final nine points of the period to garner a 44-30 cushion at halftime.
Kea bounced back from her season-low five-point performance last Sunday at Colorado with 13 points in the first half. Bailey added 10 points despite picking up three fouls.
UCLA's offensive woes continued after intermission, scoring 12 points in the third quarter and only came up with seven points in the fourth.
The lead grew to as many as 41 points for UNC late in the fourth quarter. The 34-point victory is the largest for Carolina over a non-conference Power 5 team since an 87-51 victory over Illinois in the 2013 Cancun Challenge.
Carolina faces No. 17 USF on Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
