Matt Matheny's 10th season in charge at Elon started Tuesday with a 62-56 win at Manhattan, but that was mostly an appetizer for what is likely to be the biggest game in program history. The Phoenix host their first regular season game inside the brand new Schar Center Friday when Carolina visits the Elon campus for the first time since 1950.
A protege of Bob McKillop who spent 16 seasons at Davidson before getting his first head coaching position at Elon, Matheny brings some of the same characteristics to the game as his mentor. The Phoenix consistently ranks among the nation's top teams in both 3-point attempts which generally leads to a dearth of free throw opportunities.
Elon is one of the most veteran clubs in America in 2018-19. Led by leading returning scorer and rebounder Tyler Seibring, Matheny started five seniors on Tuesday. Seibring, who had a game-high 17 points to go with eight boards against the Jaspers, is joined as a returning starter by guards Steven Santa Ana and Dainian Swoope. Sheldon Eberhardt and Karolis Kundrotas round out the expecting starting five, with the 6-11 Kundrotas serving as the primary post presence.
The Phoenix was 12-7 following a win over Colonial champ Charleston last January before slumping to a 14-18 finish and a first-round exit in the CAA tournament. With a fancy new arena and a roster full of experienced players, Elon will have had both Friday night and the 2018-19 season circled for a long time.
