December 28, 2018 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL - Sophomore Janelle Bailey tied a career high with 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help lead North Carolina to an 85-63 victory over Howard on Friday afternoon from Carmichael Arena.
North Carolina (9-5) won its final non-conference game of the season thanks to Bailey's eighth double-double of the year, one shy of the Atlantic Coast Conference lead. Shayla Bennett had 12 points and six assists, Taylor Koenen added 11 points and eight rebounds and Jocelyn Jones chipped in 10 points off the bench.
Senior Paris Kea reached 1,500 career points with a late bucket in the fourth quarter. The Tar Heels honored Stephanie Watts before the game for scoring her 1,000th career point last month against Kentucky.
Sarah Edmond had a Howard (7-6) best 16 points and Krislyn Marsh had 12.
A slow start was quickly erased with a 14-0 run that gave Carolina a 20-15 edge after 10 minutes.
Bailey dominated the second quarter for the Heels, scoring 11 of her 15 first-half points to stake Carolina to a 38-31 lead at intermission.
Koenen led the charge in the third quarter to extend the lead out to 58-46. She knocked down a three-ball well beyond the arc and then drained a foul-line jumper to close out the quarter.
Bennett opened the fourth with a triple in the corner and UNC never looked back in improving to 6-0 all-time against the Bison.
Carolina begins conference play at No. 3 Louisville on Thursday at 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
